A Few Days in the Hospital

We have had an eventful week last week-and not the good kind. Poor B started to get sick last weekend. Aunt Jenna and Uncle Justin had come to visit and Saturday he started to run a low grade fever. It was nothing too high so we monitored it with some Tylenol and he seemed to do ok Saturday and Sunday. Sunday night I had put him to bed and few hours later he had gotten sick in his bed. We then assumed we were dealing with a stomach virus and put him back to bed to rest. Monday morning he was very lethargic and still obviously not feeling well, he got sick again Monday morning and spent all day Monday either on the couch or sleeping. We didn't let him eat anything (he wasn't really interested either) but tried to do small amounts of liquids. Monday night he got sick again but slept well through the night. Tuesday morning it was much the same-very lethargic and not interested in eating. We decided since he had been sick since Saturday it was time to get him into the doctor so we made an appointment for 4:30 Tuesday afternoon. We never made it to that appointment because when he woke up from his nap around 3:00 he was screaming in pain saying his stomach hurt. I knew we were dealing with more than a stomach virus and didn't want to waste anytime to we took him straight to the emergency room. It was a pretty stressful time (waiting in the waiting room with a screaming toddler for an hour and a half, sticking him with a needle 4 times to get an IV), but once we got in they took very good care of him.

Finally getting some IV fluids. They came back and told us that his blood levels indicated he has pancreatitis. The doctor also said his levels were the highest she had ever seen in a child......not a great thing to hear when she is talking about your child! Normal blood levels for someone his age were 300 and below and B's were 1940. She said he would be admitted so they could monitor him.

We finally got into our room about 8 pm. Poor guy was so tuckered out.

Wednesday was a tough day because the IV fluids made him feel somewhat better so all he wanted to was eat and drink. The doctors felt it was best to give his stomach a rest so he was not given the ok to eat or drink until late afternoon Wednesday. We had a very angry boy most of the day :(

On our way down for a sonogram.

Wednesday afternoon he was finally given the ok to eat and drink and he was a different kid-so much happier! Also his big brother came to visit which was some of the best medicine for him-he was so happy!

Watching a movie at the hospital with big brother :)

So happy to be finally eating and drinking-he couldn't get enough!

Playing in the playroom at the hospital.

Feeling much better!

Taking a ride with G and the big balloon he gave him.

We got to come home Thursday afternoon. We were all tired and glad to be able to come home and sleep in our own beds! The doctors said the pancreatitis was most likely caused by something viral but never figured out exactly what. It was defiantly a stressful and tiring week. So thankful for my healthy kids!
